Course Introduction

Welcome to American Sign Language (ASL) Level 3! Thank you for continuing on this journey to learn about Deaf people; their language, history and culture. Students will further develop their understanding of ASL, Deaf culture, and history. Conversational dialogue is the fundamental approach to this course to advance a student’s conversational abilities. 

Course Description

This course is an advanced level of American Sign Language (ASL) emphasizing vocabulary, grammar, culture, and history of American Deaf people. Students will advance their receptive and expressive abilities in a back and forth conversation, as well as through consistent work with a video-course series. Students will discuss future plans and goal setting abilities in the target language. Student will continue to develop expressive and receptive fingerspelling skills by demonstrating increased speed and clarity. Students will be exposed to influential Deaf people and historical events. The majority of this course will be taught in American Sign Language. 

This is a yearlong course consisting of 6 units.  Upon successful completion students will receive 1 credit towards high school graduation.


Completion, with a C- or better, in American Sign Language level 2.

Required Course Materials

Please access the list of course materials from the OC Online book ordering system and order your materials as soon as possible. Oftentimes, course materials are on back order and you may experience a delay in receiving them, causing students to fall behind in their online coursework. When ordering used or rented materials, be careful that online access codes are also current.

Methods of Evaluation

  • A student will be evaluated on their receptive and expressive signing skills. All recordings will be recorded within Canvas. Expressive assessment will be graded using a rubric, which clearly marks each expectation. The rubric is always provided to the student while preparing for his/her expressive assessment.
  • Each unit culminates in a test, and each semester concludes with a final exam.  Tests and the Final Exam cover material spanning from ASL I, II, and III. Tests are completed at the end of each unit. Each unit will have one test. The tests typically cover (but not limited to): fingerspelling and number practice, vocabulary review, culture, and storytelling. The tests are a combination of skills and knowledge-based assessments.

Grading Policy

Students will demonstrate mastery through the following formative and summative assessments:

  • 40%      Assignments
  • 10%           Participation (Discussion Posts, Synchronous Sessions)
  • 10%           Quizzes
  • 25%           Final Exam
  • 15%           Unit Tests
